Any enterprise however small or large is built on a complex set of connections - interrelationships that should result in it achieving it's overall purpose. Let's call that a 'system'. The most successful business is the one that knows how to engineer and nurture that 'system' to achieve it's goals and at the same time make a difference.

And when we say difference we mean not only to its own context but to that of the wider community and society. It should be able to cope with and be ready to deal with whatever gets thrown at it as a result.

Framework Science™

We've invested the last 15 years developing frameworks for better thinking. Identifying what really matters requires the team who need to make the best decisions to think through a well designed framework.

To us frameworks are the superior mechanism for critical thinking – about everything. Made up of multiple 'parts' (modules) they are deliberately shaped to answer a question.

In our view a business needs to properly unpack where it wants to go, what needs to be different in order to get there, how it needs to behave differently, how it should manage all the parts of its 'system' to support the journey and explain why with real confidence – to everyone involved.

We know it's unlikely it will get there if it can't.

HARD EARNED LESSONS
What Did We Learn?
As clients ourselves we learned a lot. We saw that we have very different definitions of the keywords, ideas and concepts. We learned that these were very important tools - because they got used to guide the organisation. And because everyone had very different perspectives on these things there was massive risk.

We also learned that we hadn't thought enough about the issue before bringing in advisers and consultants. So we got taken down many wrong routes. This was compounded by those we asked in (advisors and consultants) lacking in impartiality; they were driven by a different agenda to us in the business.

We spent months and months, sometimes years, developing plans that were wrong or almost immediately out of date.

We saw strategic thinking as a protected species – the preserve of the few when we knew that everyone needed some level of engagement. We learned that creative thinking was something that got 'outsourced'. We didn't agree with that. We learned that a particular expertise in any one area could deflect the right result. We saw many biased opinions that didn't improve the outcome.

And that was by no means everything.
